Legislators Enjoy a ‘Taste’ of the State’s Technical Colleges

Atlanta – A huge crowd of legislators and state leaders filled into the Georgia Freight Depot in Atlanta on Tuesday, January 30, to take part in the Technical College System of Georgia’s second annual "Taste of the Technical Colleges."

Each of the system’s 34 technical colleges, including Swainsboro Technical College, was featured in the gala that showcases the very best in technical education programs for the members of the General Assembly. The event capped off a day that began with both the House and Senate passing resolutions declaring January 30 as "The Technical College System of Georgia Day" in the State of Georgia.

Technical college presidents, staff, faculty and students greeted the legislators while exhibiting a variety of their college offerings, including degree, diploma and certificate programs in Georgia’s strategic industries like healthcare, aerospace, life sciences and agribusiness. The 11 technical colleges with culinary arts programs were front and center, as the colleges’ chefs and students created a lavish buffet for the evening’s guests.

"We’re not your daddy’s old trade school anymore. This new age of technical education is here, and our legislators certainly saw that again tonight," said interim DTAE Commissioner Ron Jackson. "We’re proud to show off the exceptional quality of a Georgia technical college education and that our colleges provide a tremendous rate of return on the state’s investment."

Swainsboro Technical College displayed their Dental Assisting Program using a 32" monitor with a PowerPoint Presentation. Wanda Coleman, Swainsboro Technical College Dental Assisting Instructor, was on hand to answer questions concerning the program and supply them with printed information concerning dental assisting and the curriculum. Each of the attendees received a complimentary package of dental floss to remind them of the Dental Assisting Program and Swainsboro Technical College.

According to Mrs. Coleman, "A highly skilled dental assistant is a vital member of the healthcare team.  It is an exciting and challenging career.  The course of study at Swainsboro Technical College, will takes our students from Human Biology and Dental Anatomy to Radiology and Oral Pathology.  They participate in a "hands-on approach" that will ultimately be their ticket to success. I encourage anyone that has an interest in dental assisting to take the time to check out our Program at Swainsboro Technical College."
